Family Identity

Year: 2023

Media: Quilt

Family Identity is a quilt that explores how our sense of self is shaped, and often boxed in, by the patterns of those who raise us. Using the visual metaphor of boxes, this work examines the way identity can be absorbed, mirrored, and sometimes confined by familial influence.

The composition suggests how individual identities become nested within collective ones—how family forms a pattern that we may unconsciously repeat. But like any pattern, it can be interrupted, reworked, and remade. This quilt reflects the ongoing journey of seeing that inherited design clearly, and choosing whether to continue, alter, or unravel it.

Family Identity invites viewers to consider how identity is not fixed, but formed through repetition, relationship, and resistance. It holds space for the tension between who we were taught to be and who we are becoming.
