This self-titled quilt is all about the freedom that comes when you commit to letting go.
The first time I felt freedom was on the dance floor. Since then, I have always seen the dance floor as a powerful and sacred place with the potential to heal, summon diaspora, and break down social and political structures that keep us from being our whole selves.
The dance floor is a radical organizing space. With the right ingredients of music, lighting, and care for sharing space, we can collectively transcend our realities and bend space-time at the will of our shuffling feet. What power we have together! This primordial power is incredibly potent in Detroit, my home and the birthplace of Techno. Here, music was used as a visionary tool to build a world where Blackness and the fringes of society are centered.
Decades of dancers have tapped into this vision, bringing it to fruition with every sway and droplet of sweat. This quilt is an ode to Detroit Techno and a call to mindfully tap into our collective power for the betterment of our relationships with each other and the planet. It is my commitment to the freedom I felt so long ago. IT is your reminder to Let Go, Let Techno.
