The System’s System

Year: 2021

Media: Quilt

Dimensions: 84" x 90"

This quilt looks at the layers of categorization within data collection systems that shape our perspectives, decisions, and identity, all while creating top-heavy power dynamics that allow Microsoft, Google, and Facebook to function as gods, shaping life. These systems are a strategy to ensure that the knowledge of these systems - how they work, who they serve, and what they take - is tucked away in these companies. (There are also formulas to deal with your outrage, using words like inevitably and future to convince you to accept surveillance as a new way of life.)

It is all a shitshow, to say the least, but I like to believe in anomalies, things that can't be data crunched or put in a box. There is always something that can crash the system. Nothing is inevitable; nothing is singular. Your self-determination is more powerful than an algorithm.
