Transformation Stage 3

Year: 2024

Media: Quilt

Dimensions: 26" x 29"

This quilt looks into that moment when cultures merge, each protecting what is sacred.  In co-existing, however, something new emerges.

I think of the Spanglish I spoke as I grew up among Indian’s country slang; the evidence of that hybridity shows up in my accent. Or the way musical genres influence each other and create new genres. Or how color can change the color it sits next to, making a new color through perception.

This quilt looks at the stag of transformation that moves from the known to the new through relationship. In relationships, we show up as ourselves. Eventually, the more time we spend tending to them, there comes a moment when I becomes we.

To move from what we know to something different, I believe we must be in some kind of relationship. This quilt is about the dance between our identity and environment.
